In the end of July, during the last days of 11th edition of New Horizons International Film Festival the audience chose the best short films of the competition.

This year in the festival’s competition section there were 68 films screened in total – 24 documentaries, and 22 for each fiction and animation section. Just like every year the audience was to spot and award the most outstanding titles of each programme. On 31st July the list of winner was announced and the lucky directors – Łukasz Borowski, Natalia Brożyńska and Aleksander Dembski received their awards.

In the documentary competition  „3days of freedom” by Łukasz Borowski, produced at Wajda School beat its competitors. Film tells the story of Piotr who gets released on his first leave after 15 years of detention. Lost and stunned yet still fascinated at the same time, he tries to understand the world that is surrounding him. During just three days he will have to face the obstacles and judge them with the view to his future’s life in order to find what’s the most important for him.

The audience’s favourite among the animations – “Shivering trunks” by Natalia Brożyńska – produced at Polish National Film School in Lodz is a story exploding with an amazing sense of humour  that pictures the destructive power of negative emotions told by the director herself in her amusing monologue. Short animation has already been awarded  twice this spring, receiving a special mentions during Krakow’s OFAFA and  51st  Krakow Film Festival.

The winner in the fiction category – “Basia from Podlachie”, is a bitter comedy of manners with a bit of a love story. Dutchman Evert is fascinated by the romantic image of Polish women created by the Internet. Therefore, he decides to find a wife in Poland. One way to find the right candidate is… having a casting. Dembski shows in a satirical way differences in perceiving the contemporary world by people from Eastern and Western Europe. Film was produced in frames of sixth edition of 30 minutes programme of Munk Studio.
