SWARM

“Swarm” is an experimental audiovisual film created as a visual interpretation of a musical composition based on the sonification of fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field recorded as part of the European Space Agency’s SWARM mission.

The imagery was created using ferrofluid – a liquid containing nanoscale ferromagnetic particles – combined with coloured inks, oils and soap bubbles. The reactions were controlled with powerful neodymium magnets and recorded through a microscope or with a macro lens. Every image was produced physically on custom-built miniature film sets using original lighting systems and rotating mechanisms. The film contains no CGI or AI-generated imagery.

Observed at a microscopic scale, these reactions evoke planets, cosmic structures and the continuous movement of matter, connecting entirely earthly substances with the sounds of our planet’s magnetic field.
