KKOGDU

Ritual dances and a final farewell. The eponymous kkogdu are small wooden figurines that once adorned traditional Korean funeral biers. They served as guides for the soul of the deceased and protected it on its journey to the afterlife. In Jin Woo’s incredibly energetic animation, the figurines come to life, play and perform bizarre, rhythmic choreographies, and even metamorphose, tearing off their limbs and absorbing one another. The kkogdu do all this to fulfil their task as best they can, i.e. safely guide the deceased to the end of their earthly existence.

 An animator and VJ based in Krakow. Since 2012, she has been actively creating uncanny and poetic hand-drawn animations rooted in human relationships and traditions, alongside live performances and animated music videos. Her films have been selected for competition screenings at major international film festivals, including Annecy, Ottawa, Zagreb, Slamdance, and the London Short Film Festival. Her animated music videos have won awards at Anifilm, Anibar, and Supertoon, and her films have also been recognised at festivals such as the Delhi ISFF and Corticonici ISFF.
